Katrina Chamber Music Festival 8 - 12 August 2023

Åland

Artistic Director: Cecilia Zilliacus (violin)

Theme: “MOVEMENT”

Music can make us move: dancing!
Music can stir our emotions: moving!
Words in several languages to describe a self-contained part of a musical piece are: movimento, mouvement and movement!

Katrina is moving in 2023!
Countless musical compositions have their origins in and have been inspired by dance.

Artistic Director: Cecilia Zilliacus, violin

Composer in residence

Composers Britta Byström and Jonas S Bohlin share the position as composer in residence, and Bohlin’s “Drömtrio” for piano trio will be premiered by the Amanda Trio (Cecilia Zilliacus, violin, Kati Raitinen, cello, and Bengt Forsberg, piano).

Premier

Both composers have specially commissioned solo works for violin and choreography for one (1!) performer that will premier during the festival! Choreographer is Joakim Stephenson (former member of The Royal Swedish Ballet).

Hungarian, Slavic and Romanian dances

Johannes Brahms’ Hungarian Dances are enormously popular as they have been written and exist in many different versions and settings, as do Antonín Dvořák’s Slavic Dances and Béla Bartók’s Romanian Dances, etc. - every concert includes a piece like these.

Pianist Peter Friis-Johansson will play chamber music solo as well as four-handed with Bengt Forsberg.

“Winterreise”

The human need to move sometimes leads to longer movements: travelling!

Swedish baritone Jakob Högström and pianist Bengt Forsberg will perform songs about the noble art of travel:
Franz Schubert’s “Winterreise” and “Songs of Travel” by Ralph Vaughan-Williams.

Stockholm Saxophone Quartet

Stockholm Saxophone Quartet will move us with their music, often written specifically for them, at the Åland Art Museum.

Opus13

The young Norwegian-Swedish string quartet Opus13, who won 2nd place in the string quartet competition in Banff, Canada in September 2022, and who has already delighted several corners of the world with their music, is also coming to Åland! They will perform works by Jonas S Bohlin, Britta Byström, Felix Mendelssohn and several others.

Dance with children

Katrina Festival is collaborating with Culture Night and will let chamber music and choreography shine together. The audience will also be treated to a children’s concert with Elin Manselin!
Both concerts will take place during Culture Night in Mariehamn.

Dance and the brain

Choreographer Joakim Stephenson along with researcher Hanna Poikonen will participate in Katrina’s brunch concert in a conversation about dance and the brain.

Master courses

In connection with the festival, master classes in solo and chamber music will also be arranged in collaboration with Åland Music Institute, as well as a dance workshop led by Joakim Stephenson and Hanna Poikonen.
