Katrina Chamber Music 9 - 13 August 2022

“Erasmusik – in the footsteps of Erasmus and humanism”

Artistic Director: Cecilia Zilliacus, violin

Katrina Chamber Music 2022 draws inspiration from the erudite humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466–1536). His educational ideals and his extensive (especially by the standards of the time) travels and translations, etc., have given us access to a great deal of wisdom from antiquity as well as from his own time, influencing many, many people ever since. The extensive exchange program which has allowed exchanges between European universities since the 1980's, for example, bears his name. Erasmus promoted exchange of knowledge and good conversation—the best, perhaps the only, way to lasting peace.

Music from Erasmus’ time was predominantly religious, but during The Renaissance, music began to be created for its own sake.

Harpsichordist Julio Caballero Pérez is the artistic director of the ensemble “El Gran Teatro del Mundo” and will visit the festival along with recorder player Michael Form, viola gamba player Bruno Hurtado Gosalvez and harp player Vincent Kibildis.

Renaissance music originating in different cities and countries where Erasmus was active will be performed, along with contemporary works written for instruments from the past.

Composer Sebastian Fagerlund is the resident composer for 2022, and many works from his chamber music production will be performed. “Remain”, a composition for piano trio, has been commissioned in collaboration with the Tapiola Sinfonietta, the Storioni Festival and the O/Modernt Festival in Stockholm, and will be performed during the festival.

Other participants include pianist Simon Crawford-Phillips, violinist Julia-Maria Kretz, violinist Ylvali Zilliacus, cellist Kati Raitinen, double bassist Eero Ignatius, clarinettist Karin Dornbusch, hornist Jukka Harju, bassoonist Diego Chenna, recorder player Anna Petrini along with the ensemble of Aino Peltomaa (voice & medieval harp), Harmen Fraanje (piano) and Mikko Perkola (viola da gamba & effects).

In connection with the festival, master classes in solo performance and chamber music as well as in renaissance and baroque music will be arranged in collaboration with the Åland Institute of Music.

Katrina Chamber Music 2022 consists of about 14 concerts that are arranged in different places across the Åland Islands. The program includes free concerts as well as meetups with composers and musicians.
