Katrina Chamber Music Festival, August 7–11th, 2018

"Bach and the Babes"

Katrina Chamber Music Festival, August 7–11th, 2018
Theme: "Bach and the Babes". The festival programme will be released in February 2018

In 2018 it will be 333 years since the birth of Johann Sebastian Bach. The number 3 is a magical number, and a symbol of the Holy Trinity. We recognize Bachs stern gaze from oil paintings and are familiar with his strict fugues and severe four part pieces. At the same time, his music can relate to folk music and improvisation.

During the Katrina festival 2018 we can watch the internationally active cellist,Jakob Koranyi together with the Canadian dancer Heather Ware in the production “Reapproaching Bach” A performance which broadens our expectations and toys with our concept of what Bach and dance can be.What happens when Bachs centuries old music is introduced into a modern discourse with present day dance? And what happens when the cellist and dancer meet through intuitive communication between two different art forms?

Many “babes”
The festivals “girls”are in many cases strong women who have been forced to defend their creativity and struggle to develop their artistry despite opposition and unequal conditions. Amanda Maier, Maria Bach, Marcelle de Manziarly, Ethel Smythe, Cécile Chaminade, Grazyna Bacewicz, Amy Beach, Sofia Gubaidulina, Clara Schumann, Thea Musgrave, E-C Jaquet de la Guerre will be heard during the coming week. It was somewhat easier for women to be practising musicians. Singing and playing was part of many womens upbringing. The demanding intellectual work involved in actually writing down a composition was, however seen to be too demanding for women.

The pianist Alie Lindberg was born on Åland, studied under Franz Liszt and made a career in Europe before any other Finnish Musician. We can listen to the pianist Jun Bouterey-Ishido, prize winner in the Maj Lind competition 2017 play works from Lindbergs repertoire.

Heavenly artists
The pianist Bengt Forsberg, flutist Janne Thomsen, as well as violist Ylvali Zilliacus return to the festival.Together with violinists Ylva Larsdotter andJulia-Maria Kretz, clarinettist Erik Larsson and soprano Tuuli Lindeberg, they invite us on a wonderful musical journey in the landscape of Bach and “the girls”. The jazz singer Lina Nyberg sings her own and others compositions together with the base player Josef Kallerdahl. Barock violinist Kreeta-Maria Kentala plays from her “side by side” disc and takes us on yet another Bach-trip.A journey which shows us how close to folk music we are in Bachs music- a music of divine humanity.
